In a little small town in Southwest Louisiana lived a little African-American woman name Ruth. She worked in the house of a white owner cleaning, washing, ironing, whatever it took to keep food on the table. She reminded me of the movie Roots, by Alex Haley and the remnants of slavery. The back breaking hard work with little or no pay. She had never gone to a beauty salon, nail salon or Spa and all she did was work and take care of her family, as I remember.
When visiting Ms. Ruth one summer I said to her “Ms. Ruth when I get some money, one day you won’t have to work for white folk, you going to work for me.”
When I got older and financially able, I hired her to collect history and culture of the family, old photos, and other items. She worked two months and on the third month she died. It hurt me so bad and I had waited so long and worked so hard to try and free Ms. Ruth from this burden, I was devastated. Then I said, “the world must never forget the Ms. Ruth’s of the world.” They work and sacrifice their lives for others might live; and their life may never be known. This was the inspiration for the creation of the “Seal of the African-American”. May we never forget how we got over. It is our Faith, History, Culture, and Hope that is the Seal of the African-American, may we never be forgotten. Wearing this seal is a statement that we will never forget where we came from and is a true statement of Pride and Honor.
